And then suddenly:

"Black Friday on the Back Roads"
A Photo Scavenger Hunt Rally

Who: You, your Navigator, and the other members of Tampa Bay Miatas and FAST.
What: Driving around, getting lost, finding stuff, taking pictures of stuff, and having fun!
When: November 28 - 8am until 4pm
Where: Starting at BP on US-19 at Bayshore Dr. in Palmetto and ending at Sonic in Gibsonton with a lot of almost purely rural driving on obscure and interesting roads in-between.
Why: Because you want to have some fun driving on Black Friday instead of shopping (consider it our very own shopping boycott!), and/or you like scavenger hunts, and/or you like taking photos, and/or you have an incessant desire to take any challenge that is put before you and kick its ass, and/or you have this delusion that you'll win fabulous prizes and the eternal admiration of the entire club. (there will be prizes of some sort, and the admiration you receive will be fleeting at best)

PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED
I've got to print stuff and be prepared for the number of cars and people that will be in attendance, so I need to know who's coming!
Pre-Register by sending your $20 entry fee (per car) by PayPal to loren@invisiblesun.org no later than 6pm on Turkeyday, November 27.
(if you can't PayPal, let me know and we can work something out)
Registration much earlier than that is preferred. There is an entry limit of 30 cars which I don't expect to meet... but, you never know. Register early if you really want to do this!
Entry list will be kept updated in the next post.

Basic Event Info
This is a "Team" Event - a team is a car, a driver and a navigator... if you happen to bring a vehicle with more than two seats, you can have more people, but you can't have less. Each team must have an internet-capable smart-phone with a camera and the ability to email photos. A "real camera" may be used if you wish, but you must have the means to email your photos within 10 minutes after reaching the end of the route.

Your smart phone and GPS can also be used at your whim to help you track your location, help you get lost, help you get unlost, call 911, view porn, create porn, text other teams with trash-talk, or anything else that there may or may not be an app for.

Each team will be given a set of simple route instructions. These will not by cryptic "TSD Rally" style instructions, just straightforward "get you there" instructions. With one or more sets of keen eyes, you should be able to find all of the scavenger hunt items by simply following this path. Even if you don't find everything, you'll travel some really cool back roads that you've probably never been on before.

The Rally will be done in three rounds of 60-90 minutes each. Each round will end at a specified checkpoint at a specified time. Points will be awarded for reaching each checkpoint on-time. In the spirit of TSD rally, points will be deducted for being early OR late, the goal being to reach the checkpoint exactly on time.

For each Round, there will be a list of items to find and PHOTOGRAPH. Photos will be scored based on clearly showing the item plus at least one team member and/or their car. Bonus/Penalty points for excellent/crappy photos and anything else worthy of a bonus or penalty.

This time, we won't be physically collecting any scavenger hunt items. Just photos. How can you win? By hitting each checkpoint on-time and photographing as many of the scavenger hunt items as possible and taking FUN pictures. That's right, I said "fun". Photo judging will be weighted heavily towards fun. Even if the photo is blurry, if it looks like FUN occurred, it will likely score well.

We did a similar scavenger hunt with Tampa Bay Miatas back in April and had a ridiculous amount of fun with it! Here's the photo gallery from that event.

FAQ:
Will I have to take my car down bumpy-ass dirt roads? Nope. All roads are paved and mostly in good condition.
I've got someplace to be, can I leave early? The 4pm finish time includes time for evaluation and scoring of photos, enjoying lunch, and handing out awards. We should be DONE with all of that by 4pm, probably earlier. If we get started on time, the last cars should be finishing the route around 1pm. If you really need to be somewhere earlier, be sure to arrive early and let me know so that you can be one of the first cars out and finish up to an hour earlier. And, of course, you can abandon the route at any time if you need to... just let me know if you do!
What if I can't find a navigator? Then you're not trying hard enough! Ask around on forums, social media, whatever. Call your friends, family, co-workers. It's not THAT hard to find somebody to go for a fun backroads drive with you! You could offer to navigate for someone else, as well.
I've never done anything like this, should I be nervous? Nah. This isn't a "real" TSD rally. The instructions are written to NOT get you lost or to confuse you in any way. The segment times are generous enough to allow for stops for photo ops. The goal is just to have fun exploring the countryside, emphasis on the FUN!
Won't I get in trouble if I get caught racing on public roads? Stop right there! That's NOT what we're doing! This is NOT a race. If you're expecting a race, please stay home! IF you opt to drive at imprudent speeds or otherwise drive irresponsibly, yes, you could be ticketed. Worse yet, you could crash your car, hurt yourself, or hurt someone else. You're not on a race track -- this is not a race.

This event is just a week away, and it's going to be a busy week for most people. Wrangle up a team and get on this before you forget!

Pre-drove the route today. The roads were in WAY better condition than I expected! Only one road was on par with crappy Tampa roads. The rest were great. And traffic was nil! Fantastic!

We're up to 5 confirmed teams, and a few maybes. Join us, it'll be a good time!

I stayed up late and put the finishing touches on the route, as well as the scavenger hunt item lists.

Also made this. I was pissed, too. Cathy and I drove the whole route yesterday, and she had her camera, but we didn't stop to take a single photo all day! I had to lift this one from Google Street View.

Idunno, man. I posted it 2 weeks ago specifically so that everyone would have plenty of notice.

It's time to commit, people! I need to know who's going by 6pm tomorrow. You can't "just show up", I won't have a set of route instructions available for you if you do.

Registration for this event closes tonight! I'd love to see more of you come out and have some fun on the back roads.

Philip, I never got a registration from you or your friend Courtney, are you guys in or out? Do you both have navigators to ride with you?

With or without the win, this was a great event. (Who am I kidding, winning is pretty damn cool!) I owe it all to my super navigator, Julianne. The course was on some really nice roads where we went quite a while with out seeing another car. Definitely more cows than people. If you missed this one, you missed a great time.

Okay, results are done. Tally sheets are included at the end of the photo gallery.

1. Rice - 556 points - Solid photos, and LOTS of them coupled with minimal checkpoint time penalties clinched it for this team!
2. Wagenfohr - 467 points - Perfect checkpoint scores and consistent photos paid off for this BMW crew!
3. Dorey - 416 points - Perfect checkpoint scores were a good start for this team of first-time rallyists, but not enough attention to photos cost them a lot of potential bonus points.
4. Sculerati - 402 points - A wrong turn in Round 2 cost this team 50 points. Playing catch-up in Round 3, they lost another 10 points there. Those 60 points alone would have put them in the running for 2nd place! Taking advantage of some additional photo ops could have won it for them. (but, chasing the clock and getting additional photos were at odds with each other!)
5. Nyman - 176 points - These guys missed a turn or two in the first round, and were also having technical difficulties with their camera phone. That made them 12 minutes late on Round 1, which compounded to over 20 minutes on the more difficult Round 2. They were still catching up in Round 3. Being so far behind limited their photo-taking opportunities, but the photos that they did get were very good. Carl said they were going shopping for a new car and a new phone!

As far as I could tell, everyone had a great time! Hope to see more people for the next one.

Some good pictures, looks like it was a good time. I was wanting to join, but with family in town that wasn't scheduled to leave until Friday afternoon I couldn't this time.

Possibly another scavenger hunt like what we did back in April?

Many thanks Loren. Great fun event, roads were well selected and weather cooperated. My navigator does not like to navigate and thinks I drive too wild. The clutch master cylinder going south did not help but we (I) had a good time anyway.
Thanks again.

I'm glad you were able to coerce your navigator into coming out and letting you have fun, Carl!

Philip, this rally WAS a scavenger hunt rally similar to the one in April. We might be doing this one again in December if there is enough interest.
