We've settled on May 2nd. Ben has to drive from downtown Tampa, so 10:00am is probably a good start time.

Who: Ben, Loren, Jamie... you?
What: Finishing suspension/brake swap and stuff
When: Saturday, May 2 - 10am until we're done (hopefully no later than 5pm or so)
Where: Jamie's shop... somewhere in New Port Richey (pm for address)
Why: Because Race Car

If you'd like to come watch/help/heckle, please post so that we know you're coming. We're not in dire need of help or anything, but it's an entertaining project. And, I'm sure we'll eat lunch and drink Cherry Coke, the elixir of life.

Attendees:
Ben
Loren
Jamie

Stuff we still need to do:
  • Button up the front suspension (it's mostly installed, needs final fitting and everything tightented)
  • Remember that the tie-rod ends will need a washer under the nut or they won't tighten up
  • Fit spacers under the top front strut nuts. (there's a gap)
  • Get rear strut drain plug bungs welded Done
  • Chase threads on rear strut rod (die is in the S10)
  • Refill and install rear struts (Loren will be bringing them)
  • Adjust front camber and toe
  • Flush & bleed brake fluid
  • Adjust handbrake (maybe replace rear brake shoes?)
  • Install driver's seat
  • Install gauge kit (temp/oil pressure/voltage)
  • Check shifter, maybe improve the fix
  • Install Miata wheels and drive that bitch!

We need to chase the threads on one of the rear shocks.

Updated the first post with date/time. My wife has made plans for me in the morning, so I won't be there until around 3pm. But, Ben and Jamie will be there earlier. (y'all let me know if you want to adjust that start time)

Plenty to do.

Anybody who's coming, bring your container of random spare Miata nuts and bolts. In particular, we're going to be chasing a few large(ish) washers.

I can't think of anything else that we're lacking to get this car back together.

Joe Brannon welded the shocks for us, so that job is done.

Who's coming to this shindig, anyway?

I've got the rear struts in Cathy's trunk along with some M12 2.5mm thick washers that might come in handy. Hmmm... I'll grab cotter pins, too. Anything else I should bring?

Cathy will be dropping me off there right about 3pm.

I know I'm late to the game but could I get a chance to come take a look at the car around 2:40? I just realized I can catch the end of the work. I live in the area.

Car is back I the road. More later.

Meanwhile, to do list.

  • Weld cut on rear subframe
  • Check length of bump stops
  • Check right rear shock for leaks
  • Front shock top bolts (may need spacers somewhere to tighten and eliminate clunk)
  • Replace temp sensor
  • Check engine mount to swaybar clearance
  • Check lower radiator hose clearance (there is none, do we need to fix it?)
  • Rear wheel spacers and bolts
  • Rear brake shoes
  • Shock tower brace
  • Check camber
  • Flog the car hard in some turns and check tires for rubbing
  • Remove rear seatbelts
  • Figure out how to bolt in a harness bar (then fab harness bar)

I have welders, cutters, digital camber gauge, big effin hammer and more. Also, did you guy look at the rear shoes? More times than not, I see that they are not properly adjusted so that they never really engage.

Figured we'd go ahead and replace the rear shoes, check that the wheel cylinders are functioning and get the hand brake adjusted later. At this time, the handbrake is dead and we suspect that the rear brakes are working very little, if at all.

Today, the goal was just to HAVE brakes and be happy that we don't have any leaking calipers or wheel cylinders. Mission accomplished!

Pedal is weak, but not at all "scary" like it was before the swap. For 100% salvage yard brakes, it's not bad at all. The car stops confidently.

The wheel fitment worked out okay. We'll need rear wheel spacers (I have a pair) for some strut clearance in the rear. The look is great! The ride height is right about where we wanted it. It looks "silly, but not quite ridiculous".

I didn't drive the car all that much, but it feels about like it should. New suspension is firm, but not harsh. Feels balanced with crisp steering response. We set the front toe, but didn't measure anything else. It has "some" visible front camber. Doesn't appear to be too much, so we'll have to check to see that it's enough and it's reasonbly even. This car will be fun to play with!

Here's a short video of Jamie coming back from the second test run:

And a photo of a happy Ben:

Have a look at the to-do list a couple posts up and let me know if I'm forgetting anything. We'll make a plan to start working on some of this stuff in the coming weeks. I think our new goal is to put it on an autocross course on May 23.

All is not well with the Festiva. I drove it to work this morning it started bogging down, then started surging and stalled. I can get it to restart if I crank the car while pumping the gas pedal, but it gets cranky 10 seconds or so later and stalled at pretty much every light on the way to work. Fuel pump?

Hmm. Maybe a fuel pump. Does the car have a spot on the fuel rail to test pressure? Also, does it maybe have the original fuel filter?

Fuel pump or fuel filter seem most likely, but I'd still check the common ignition components first.

The way the fuel filter is hacked in underneath the brake master cylinder, we know it's been messed with. Maybe the filter was replaced already, and it was the fuel pump that was actually the problem? I think the FP is accessible by removing the rear seat and an access panel.

Looks like the coil wire wouldn't stay on the coil. A few zipties and she seems to be back to her usual self.

Fuel filter was replaced, the new one didn't fit in its home, so we improvised with zip ties. Fuel sock was replaced as well, but not the pump. Glad it was just the wire.

For those of you playing at home, it looks like the fuel pump has bit the bullet.

Shouldn't matter -- didn't we agree that Ron pushing generated more power than the stock engine?

Replacement $24 fuel pump ordered. Amazon Prime will have it to us by Thursday.

Meanwhile, the lady sleeps in my driveway.
