Doing this one at my place in Safety Harbor. Ben and I have heart surgery to do on the FASTiva. Timing belt, waterpump, head gasket and associated stuff... plus other jobs that are piling up on it, like installing a new fuel tank. But, my driveway has room for several Miatas, and we'll be there all day, so I'm open to other projects. Whatcha got?

Who: Loren, Ben & whoever shows up to help or watch or work on other stuff
What: Wrenching on Mazdas
Where: Loren's Garage (PM me if you don't know where that is)
Why: Because the damned car leaks water out as quickly as you can pour it in!
When: June 13, 8am-4pm

We're all about good eats, so we'll surely do lunch. What we do depends on how many people are coming. So, be sure to let us know if you're coming! I'll keep the lists below updated. At the very least, we need to know how much Cherry Coke to have on-hand!

Noobs, y'all are welcome and encouraged to come. No experience required. We've taught more than a few people which way to turn a wrench! We're happy to help you do minor (and sometimes major, but probably not today unless you can enlist some additional help) maintenance and repair, or just give you a tour of your Miata.

People:
  1. Loren
  2. Ben
  3. Phillip P
  4. Johnny L
  5. Andy (maybe in the morning)

Jobs:
  1. Festiva Fuel Tank
  2. Festiva TB/WP/Head Gasket/Valve Seals/Engine Mounts
  3. Miata VICS wiring and tuning on the Race Cyarrr

I guess this means I need to pull the fuel pump out again and clean the sock so the car can at least make it to Safety Harbor. I'll be ordering the new tank today. Personally, I'd like to make the Fuel Tank the #1 priority for the day, but that's mostly because I'm the one who has to sit and wait for a tow if it craps out again.

We should be able to put the car up on stands and work both ends without issue. Especially if a few extra hands show up.

We need to get into the enginge and get the head off as early as possible so that we can clean it and get those valve seals replaced. Barring no issues, we'll be able to get it back together pretty quickly. Hopefully, Johnny or Andy or somoene who's more familiar with head work can come make sure we don't screw that up.

You know what might help a little if you have time and want to smoke up your neighborhood? Run some Seafoam through the intake. That should make the bottom side of the head a lot cleaner and easier to deal with. Can try distilled water if you want. I've never tried it, but I've read that it works the same way Seafoam does, just don't put it through so quickly that you hydrolock the engine.

I don't know if I will be able to do this, I've got a birthday/graduation party I'm supposed to go to.
I think that's in the afternoon so maybe able to be there for a few early hours.

I still have to wire in the vics and clean up some wiring on the race cyarr. Maybe ill save that for the 13th. Of course I'll have to data log after the vics changes the volumetric efficiency, so a crazy(ish) ride along may be in order.

All of our parts have arrived. Full TB/WP kit, engine mounts, valve stem seals, head gasket, fuel tank, etc.

Still planning on the Saturday. Anybody else gonna make this? Any other project to work on?

We'll need your valve spring compressor, Johnny. Can't think of anything else that I don't have on-hand.

Which kind of spring compressor do you need? The head on the motor type or off?

Limped the FASTiva from Tampa to Safety Harbor today. As Ben has said, it runs great for about 20 minutes. Then either the fuel pump strainer or the fuel filter starts struggling to flow fuel and the engine starts stumbling at idle due to lack of fuel pressure.

Gonna try to run some SeaFoam through the intake tomorrow morning, let it soak all day, and then finish the Seafoam later in the afternoon. That should make the combustion chamber less gunky when we pull the head Saturday.

Everybody still in for this? Anybody else want to make an appearance or work on anything?

I don't know that I can/will get one in time, but I need a left rear wheel bearing replaced. I've read enough to know that this does require a press. I that going to be available?? If not, is it a possible job without one?

Chuck, I don't have a press. You can do a rear wheel bearing without a press if you don't mind banging on stuff with a big hammer. We may be able to remove the hub and find someplace to take it to use a press. John Grewe has one if he's available (over in Largo), not sure if Johnny has one or not. He'll probably be there tomorrow.

Good news & bad news:
The bad news is that we won't have fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies right out of the oven tomorrow. The good news is that they are already baked and taste-tested, and I couldn't possibly eat them all before tomorrow.

Fuel filter is easy. 5 minutes, 2 if Andy does it.

I'll be out moving cars around and finishing the SeaFoam treatment around 8am. See y'all when you get here.

Johnny called out, and Andy was busy with unplanned kitchen repairs, so it was just me, Ben and Phillip today. (thanks for your help, Phillip!)

We ended up without a proper valve spring compressor (I finally found the one I had, but it was not up to the task)... and Amazon sent us the wrong waterpump. So, we didn't get everything done that we intended to.

Ben did succeed in getting the fuel tank replaced, and we confirmed exactly what was happening with the old one. The "cup" built into the bottom of the tank around the fuel pickup that is designed to prevent fuel starvation in turns when the fuel level is low has a little pipe that connects it to the rest of the fuel tank. That pipe was clogged with rust from the fuel tank. So, what happened was the engine would run fine for about 20 minutes until the fuel in that cup ran out and then it would start fuel starving. After the car sat for a good long while, enough fuel would seep back into the cup to allow it to run again. New fuel pump, new fuel pump, new pickup sock, some new fuel lines and a new fuel filter... all of our fuel problems should be resolved!

Under the hood, we got everything disassembled, the head removed, the top of the block cleaned, and we're almost ready to reassemble once we get the valve stem seals replaced and procure the proper waterpump.

We're pretty excited to know that we have our #1 reliability problem resolved, and once things are reassembled the car won't leak water or oil, and won't smoke... from there, we just need to roll the rear fenders and we'll be ready for a good autocross shakedown!

That was fun but I now hate the back-rear engine mount. I did make a small album of pictures:

Can't wait to see this car our running with the Miatas at an autocross.

glad to hear it was successful.. I had a small success of my own. I was able to replace my rear wheel bearing, with the help of a local shop up the street . They did the pressing in of the bearing, and hub thereafter. No more "whirring" from the rear axle. Next is putting a stock fuel pump back in.....once I locate one. I would have dropped in, but I was against the clock in getting the wheel together. had a 11am meeting in tampa...made it there at 11:15 so I still call that a win. Next time!

Cool photos, Phillip! You really didn't spend a lot of time taking them, I'm surprised at what you came up with in such a short time.

Yeah, as Philip noted, we had "part 2" of this tech session today. We did the valve stem seals, cleaned the crud off of the exhaust valves, got the head all back together and bolted it to the block. This Tool is a must for anyone doing head work! With it you can easily remove valve springs in about 2 seconds with just a whack of a hammer. You can reinstall the springs, retainters and keepers with nearly the same ease in maybe 10-15 seconds with a little practice.

We'll get together again sometime soon to finish buttoning up the engine. If I can get my hands on Brian's fender roller, we may roll the rear fenders at the same time.
