I had a blast. It was great meeting all of you for the first time. Loren thank you for all your help. I am sorry we had some issues with the map. Next time I will do better to provide proper directions. My thanks to Dan and Robert for taking the lead. I am sure I would have gotten us all lost. The roads were amazing. I didn't know Florida had roads like that.
Many of us in the second group that I was in were talking about doing something like this on a monthly basis. Apparently not everyone wants to autocross but it does seem like everyone wants to drive their cars. Lol
We had a really great time, I am so glad I put this together even though I had know clue what I was doing. Perhaps next time we will do the second half of the run instead. I am told the roads are even prettier.
I will post some pivtures as soon as I figure out how.

Thanks for setting this up! I haven't had some non-autocross related fun in my car in far too long.

Since this seemed to be so popular I have begone researching the next run already. I promise it will be more thought out with better directions and maps for all. I look forward to ideas and advice from all of you. It was nice to make some new friends.

Unless you're making an individual challenge out of it (not sending cars out in groups), you don't need to print maps/instructions for all. Just your leads. With a group drive, the group is just going to follow, and most people like it that way. They get to enjoy the scenery and focus on driving without having to think about where they are. Keep your groups at a manageable size and drill into people's heads that it's everyone's responsibility to keep the group together (but not on top of each other), and it works.

While I'm thinking about it, we've been doing it this way for years, but it's stupid. When we meet at Flyin' J, we tend to make those two awkward left turns right there where there's a truck stop and always trucks turning in. Not the best way to start a group drive! Think about other options. Turn right out of there and go down to Bellamy Bros Road. Or meet somewhere else, we don't have to meet there! Choose a meeting point that's not so difficult/dangerous to get out of.

That truck just didn't want to share the left lane... and you where a little early on that turn.

Not just talking about me, just that turn, our just that day. It's a bad way to start a drive, especially with new people. I have the same thought every time we do it.

Sadly too late, I noticed there is a side exit from the Flying J complex onto Pasco Rd. by leaving past the truck wash. We could have avoided 52 that way. 20/20 hindsight, as they say.

Unfortunately, there isn't actually a good way to cross the parking lots last I looked; got to keep'm separated...

Now that I am out west these are the type of drives that I go on with a group out here:

We use two way radios for communication between the groups. Just a thought.

+1 to everything already said. Also a first time poster and participant (though I had registered some time ago but never posted here!) Glad to have had the opportunity to attend, meet some true enthusiasts, and learn of a few of the more pleasurable roads to take up here (milk runs are probably gonna take a little longer now). Thanks to everyone involved! Looking forward to the next one.

(PS - great pics Philip - thanks!)

Wow I wish we had roads like that here. Two way radios would be a good idea perhaps. They are using them for the North Carolina Gap meet that is coming up. I so want to go but unfortunately can not.
Still working on the next run how ever. I have come up with some interesting possibilities. I will keep you all informed. Thanks for the pics Philip. Still haven't figured how to put mine on here. ;lol

Affordable radios (FRS) only work line-of-sight. Good for comm within a group, but not much for between groups. But, really, if we need communication between groups, this is 2016. Shoot me a text! What could you possibly need to tell another group? "We have arrived" "We made a wrong turn, will be 10 minutes late"... text would work for that.

Note that Philip's pics are NOT posted here. They are posted on Flickr. Much easier to upload photos there, then you can share links here and anywhere else.

We use VHF Two Way radios. Guess it wouldn't really be needed there since it is relatively flat. Oh well, just trying to be of some use to the group.

So, we had a bit of a challenge with the directions on this drive...

We had a link to a custom map on Google with all the way points for the route, but we couldn't figure out how to easily use this map for turn-by-turn directions. I did a bit of searching and testing and found a way to use the custom map for navigation. This might not be the only or easiest way, but we can try this for a next drive and make navigation of a route a bit easier.

The challenge is that Google custom maps cannot be used for turn-by-turn navigation (discussed at length on Google Maps forum). Custom maps are intended to show a particular drive or run, but cannot be used in your phone for navigation. We therefore have to convert the Google custom map to a gpx file, a common format used by many navigation software systems (Garmin, TomTom, etc.). Please find below the steps how it worked for me, all done on my Android phone (so no computer required). I assume it can be done in a similar way on an iPhone as well, but I have not confirmed that.

1. Open the link to the custom map with the route in your phone's browser (Chrome in my case).
2. In the bottom of the screen the name of the map should appear. Click on this name to get the list of way points.
3. From the options menu in the top of this screen select 'Download KML'. This is the file format used by Google Maps for custom maps. The file will be placed in your downloads folder on your phone.
4. Go to the following website: http://www.kml2gpx.com on your phone. Follow the instructions on this website to convert the kml file to a gpx file and download the gpx file to your phone.
5. Now comes the tricky part: you need a gpx compatible navigation application to load your gpx file. This can be an app on your phone or even a stand alone GPS unit that allows upload of gpx files. In my case I am using a free app called OsmAnd, a navigation app for Android using Open Street Maps. I opened the gpx file with this app and the route was loaded. OsmAnd now allows you to navigate to the starting point of your route and continue to navigate the route from there.

Hope this helps for our next drive! I am going to drive the route again this coming Saturday to confirm that the directions provided after the file conversion are correct.

I was thinking we could run the second half of the enchilada run but I am open for anything. Robert thanks for the app to make the maps work. I will check that out asap.I also found a motorcycle run called secret roads of skyway and the second half is called tail of the gecko, The maps are very generic but look promising. I plan to run this route and see what it's like. I will let you all know. Has any one heard of this run before? In the mean time I am down for a run just about any where. I just want to drive. lol

It's a nice drive... but, not really worthy of a name like that. There are some nice roads out between the orange groves out that way. Not really a lot of curves, but pleasant.

I'm going to suggest that if anyone is trying to plan something for the 9th, go ahead and claim the date! Start an event thread and at least have a start point even if you don't have a route yet. This is Florida. LOTS of stuff to do. If you don't get on the calendar, people will commit to doing other things.

Ny calander is clear for the 9th if anybody wants to do a run. I have one in mind but I need to go drive it first, but seafood sounds good too.

So has any body here heard of the East side loop? It has two different restaurants on the route. Any one interested for 9th?
